Oneworld status match opportunity available for 20-plus frequent flyer programs

Elite status matches provide a unique opportunity for frequent flyers to extend the value of their existing benefits to other loyalty programs. Royal Air Maroc, a member of the Oneworld alliance, is currently offering a status match promotion where elite status holders from select airlines can earn Silver, Gold, or Platinum status with the airline for a fee. This status match also grants Oneworld Sapphire status, which comes with a range of valuable airline benefits.

Under this offer, eligible travelers with existing elite status can match to any of Royal Air Maroc’s three status tiers. However, there is a one-time application cost for each tier: $150 for Silver, $450 for Gold, and $1,000 for Platinum Lite or $1,500 for Platinum Standard. If you qualify, you’ll enjoy elite status benefits through June 30, 2024.

The most appealing option is Safar Flyer Gold, which grants Oneworld Sapphire status. However, the price for this status match is significantly higher than previous promotions, and the status is only valid for six months. In comparison, I took advantage of this promotion in spring 2022 and received a full year of status for only 49 euros ($54) when I successfully status-matched from Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Gold.

To extend your status for another six months through December 31, 2024, you can either take one flight with Royal Air Maroc and earn at least one status mile or have at least one future booking linked to your Safar Flyer account by June 30, 2024.

To status match with Royal Air Maroc Safar Flyer, you need to review your eligibility. There are over 20 loyalty programs that qualify for a status match, including Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus. However, Oneworld programs like American AAdvantage and Alaska Mileage Plan are not eligible.

To begin the status match process, you’ll need to sign up for the Safar Flyer loyalty program and receive a frequent flyer number. Then, you can apply for a status match by providing your personal information and Safar Flyer number. It may take up to five business days for your new status to reflect in your Safar Flyer account.

The benefits of Safar Flyer Silver include Oneworld Ruby status, priority check-in, preferred seating, priority waitlist on standby, and more on partner airlines. Safar Flyer Gold, on the other hand, grants Oneworld Sapphire status, which includes access to business-class lounges, extra baggage allowance, priority boarding/check-in/standby on waitlists on partner airlines, and free transportation of pets in the cabin when flying with Royal Air Maroc.

Is it worth it to participate in this status match promotion? The answer depends on your travel plans and priorities. While the cost is quite high, if you have upcoming flights with American or Alaska Airlines and want access to their lounges or free checked bags, it may be worth considering. However, keep in mind that to use the perks of your matched status, you must have your Royal Air Maroc number on your reservation, which means you won’t earn miles with another carrier.

Overall, the ability to status match to Royal Air Maroc Gold and Oneworld Sapphire is an attractive opportunity, especially for travelers who value lounge access. However, due to the high cost and limited validity, it’s important to evaluate whether the benefits of Safar Flyer status in the first half of 2024 justify the expense.
