Major life event? Delta’s ‘Reclaim My Status’ program will help you keep your elite status

Earning airline elite status is a goal for many frequent travelers. It comes with a range of benefits, such as priority boarding, access to airport lounges, and the coveted first-class upgrades. For those who have achieved elite status, it becomes a bit of an obsession. You take deliberate actions to maintain it, and losing it can be a blow to your travel experience.

However, life events can sometimes disrupt your travel routine and make it difficult to meet the requirements for elite status qualification. This is where Delta Air Lines comes in. Delta is implementing a program called “Reclaim My Status” to help its loyal members maintain and earn back their Medallion elite status after a major life event takes them off the road.

The program works like this: if a Delta Medallion member loses their status or drops to a lower level due to a qualifying life event, such as becoming a parent, switching jobs, or experiencing a medical issue, they can apply to reclaim their old status once they’re ready to start traveling again. It’s important to note that Delta does not accept COVID-19 as a qualifying life event for this program.

Once approved, Delta will give the customer their old status back, complimentary, for three months. During this time, they have the opportunity to earn back their status by meeting the minimum Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) requirements on qualifying Delta flights. The three-month period begins immediately after the request is approved. To be eligible to extend their status, members must enroll between January 1 and December 31, 2024, and meet the minimum MQD threshold for their status.

For example, if a member was previously a Delta Gold and wants to reclaim that status through January 31, 2026, they would have three months to earn 2,500 MQDs. MQDs can be earned on Delta flights, purchases with eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards, or by booking a Delta Vacations package.

It’s important to note that members cannot earn a Medallion status higher than what they earned in the previous Medallion year through the Reclaim My Status program. For example, if a member previously had Delta Platinum status and earns enough MQDs during the three-month period to qualify for Diamond, they can still only extend their Platinum status for that year and the following year.

To qualify for the Reclaim My Status program, members must have experienced a major life event that affected their ability to travel. Delta provides a list of eligible life events, such as becoming a parent, changing jobs, going back to school, experiencing a medical issue (excluding COVID-19), or needing to take care of a friend or family member. Documentation is required to prove that the life event affected their ability to travel.

Members can participate in the program once every three years, although exceptions may be made for certain situations. Delta encourages members to apply only when they are ready to travel at their old pace again, as the clock will start ticking once the case is approved.

The Reclaim My Status program was implemented in response to customer requests and aims to provide flexibility and support during major life events. It gives Delta SkyMiles loyalists a chance to regain their elite status with a lower threshold to reach than having to start from scratch.
