Digital Nomad Visa Applications to Launch in Japan in March

Feb. 02, 2024

Japan is set to roll out a digital nomad visa next month, allowing visitors to work and stay in the country for up to six months. The visa will be available for remote workers who earn at least $68,300 annually, including self-employed individuals. Digital nomad visas will be issued starting at the end of March, allowing visa holders to work from anywhere in Japan.

The visa will be available for short- and mid-term workers from more than 45 countries, including the United States, that have a tax treaty with Japan permitting stays in the country for up to six months. Qualified applicants must fall under the “specified activities” visa category and have private health insurance.

According to Unseen Japan, digital nomads will be eligible to renew their visa for an additional six months after exiting the country for six months. However, the application process and cost of the visa are still unclear as of February 2.

Japan’s digital nomad program is the latest in a growing trend of countries offering visas for remote workers to live abroad for extended periods. Italy, Croatia, and Portugal are among the nearly 50 countries that currently offer similar programs.
