Alaska receives first 737 MAX 8, plans retrofits for existing fleet

Alaska Airlines has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing fleet overhaul, with the recent delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This marks the beginning of a larger series of aircraft deliveries that will occur over the next several years as Alaska invests billions to add between 15 and 25 new Boeing planes each year until 2027.

The arrival of the MAX 8 in Alaska’s fleet is just the beginning, as the company expects to take delivery of seven more this year, including four by March. The airline has firm orders for an additional 80 737 MAX jets, with options and purchase rights for another 105. This includes plans for over 40 MAX 10s in the future.

The MAX 8 aircraft will be configured to seat 159 passengers, with 12 in the first-class cabin, 30 in the premium cabin, and 117 in the main cabin. While the MAX 8 is a new addition to Alaska’s fleet, the airline already operates 65 MAX 9s, making it the second most commonly flown aircraft in their fleet.

One of the key advantages of the MAX 8 is its longer range compared to the MAX 9. Alaska Airlines executives have highlighted this as a significant benefit, creating new opportunities for longer nonstop routes. In fact, the airline has already announced plans to fly the MAX 8 between New York’s JFK Airport and Anchorage International Airport in Alaska, starting in June.

In addition to expanding its fleet, Alaska Airlines is also planning to overhaul its older Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The company will invest $130 million to update the cabins and create a consistent product across its fleet. The 737-800s will receive two additional seats, increasing capacity from 159 to 161. The most significant change will be in the first-class cabin, which will increase from 12 to 16 seats, a 33% increase.

The cabin updates will include new seat covers, cushions, carpet, lighting, bulkheads, cabin dividers, and seatback device holders. The retrofitting process will begin this month on 20 of the 737-800s, with all of these aircraft receiving some form of new interior by 2025.

Alaska Airlines’ fleet overhaul is just one aspect of the company’s future growth plans. In addition to adding new aircraft, the airline recently announced plans to acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a deal worth $1.9 billion. If the acquisition is successful, the combined company would operate over 360 aircraft, with both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines continuing to fly as separate brands.
